Homework Sept. 25, 2008:
Solving Literal Equations

1)Solve for x in terms of a, b, and c: ax-b=c

ax-b=c
ax=c+b
x=(c+b)/a

2)Solve for x in terms of a, b, and c: ax+b=c
ax+b=c
ax=c-b
x=(c-b)/a

3)Solve for r in terms of s, π, and h: s=2πrh

s=2πrh
s=(2πrh)/2πh
r=s/(2πh)

4) solve for y in terms of a, b, and x: ay-bx=2

ay-bx=2
ay=2+bx
y=(2+bx)/a

5) solve for p in terms of r, s, and t: rp+s=t

rp+s=t
rp=t-s
p=(t-s)/r

6) if dx-2=h, then x is equal to

dx-2=h
dx=h+2
x=(h+2)/d

7) solve for y in terms of x:
3y+2=x

3y+2=x
3y=x-2
y=(x-2)/3

8) which equation is equivalent to x+2y=6

1) y=-x+6 Answer: 4
2) y=-(1/2)x+6
3) y=-x+3
4) y=-(1/2)x+3

x+2y=6
2y=6-x
y=(6-x)/2
y=3+(1/2)x

9) Solve for r in terms of p, t, and i: i=prt

i=prt
r=i/(pt)

10) if 9x+2a=-3a+4x, then x equals

9x+2a=-3a+4x
9x-4x=-3a-2a
5x=-5a
x=-5a/5
x=-a

11) in terms of c, y, and a, what is the value of x in the equation:
2ax+2y=c
2ax=c-2y
x=(c-2y)/2a

12) if x=2a-b^2, then a equals

x=2a-b^2
b^2+x=2a
a=(b^2+x)/2

1) 4x+12=77 subtract 25 to both sides 77-25=52 4x=52 divide by 4 x=13

2) 6x=.7=10.3 subtract .7 to both sides 10.3 - 7= 9.6 6x=9.6 divide by 6 x=1.6

3) 19+1/4x=40, subtract 19 to both sides, 40-19=21.4 , 1/4x=21.4 multiply both sides by 4, x= 21 x 4, x=84

4) 3/8x-13=11,add 13 to both sides 3/8x=24, multiply both sides by 8,3x=24 x 8, 3x=192,divide both sides by 3, x=64

5) 8x=35+x,subtract x to both sides, 7x=35, divide both sides by 7, x=5

6) 6x=3x=24,subtract 3x to both sides, 3x=24, divide both sides by 3, x= 8

7) 3x+22=7x-14, subtract 3 to both sides, 22= 4x-14, add 14 to both sides, 36=4x, divide both sides by 4, x=9

8) b+10=52,subtract 10 to both sides, b= 42, 42+c=52 subtract both sides by 42, c=10
42+10=52
Bruce=42 Cindy=10

9) 4x+x=55, 5x=55, divide both sides by 5, x=11
4(11)+11= 44+11=55
Maria=44 Marty=11

10) x=6 y=26

11) 4x-5=3(17), 4x-5=51, 4x=56, x=14

12) n-3=6(12), n=75

13) 35+n=4(3) n= -23

14) 2x-5=1, 2x=6 , x=3
