Aim: How do you solve equations in two variables?

Homework: Complete worksheet above, all problems.

Lesson review;

  • A linear equation in two variables is an equation that has an X and a Y variable and represents a line.

  • All points on the line are of X and Y coordinates called "ordered pairs"

  • The Y coordinate depends on the seleced value of the X coordinate. So Y is called the dependent variable and the X is called the independent variable because you can make X  any value.

  • To find solutions, make a table of with X and Y columns and then follow the steps below

Solving equation for Y variable in terms of X variable

1. Select and substitute any value for X in the equation and solve for Y.

2. You now have X and Y values (ordered pair) that represents a point on the line of the represented by the equation.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to obtain more solutions of the equation
